I used to bottle up all my emotions and problems, until I
was finally able to grab my pen and notebook and let them explode all over the
paper. Poems focusing on my problems filled my notebooks. I'd lament and cry
over how bad I thought my life was. I would reside in this funk, feeling like
things would never get better. I was depressed. From my perspective, it was
true and justified because I believed I was such a failure. I wouldn't even
begin anything because I already foresaw my defeat. I would let my hardships
keep me down for so long that I had no clue how to escape this unhealthy
mindset. The more I grew in my relationship with God, the more I was able to
see that for every problem I could face, God was the prescription.
I learned that when He sent His Word to heal us, it was for
any and every condition of the human spirit--body, mind, and soul. Suddenly,
writing about my problems in life was only the beginning. It wasn't complete
until I could find the prescription in God's Word for whatever ailed me. That
is where the Poetic Prescriptions series began.
The responses I've gotten from my other Poetic Prescriptions books have made me realize that people crave to know how to be the kind of people God has called them to be--not only to live by the title of Christian but also to take on Christ's nature and His authority that comes with it. Instead of letting ourselves be stopped by the "life locusts" and the assaults that come our way, we should conquer them. And after we've conquered them, we are encouraged to lead others out of the same pit that we've escaped.
In Poetic Prescriptions for Plaguing Problems, I've taken the 10 plagues that the Egyptians faced in the Bible (found in Exodus, Chapters 7-12), historical plagues like the bubonic plague (Black Death),and combined them with the things that plague us now, such as thoughts of divorce, obesity, fear, suicide, AIDS, domestic violence, broken hearts, etc. Whether physical ailments or broken spirits due to bad relationships or poverty, I've written poetry that will meet you right where you are. I wrote this book to bring hope and courage to those of you in need of direction, and to let you know that we're in this together.
